  • Amnesty International The AI's home page. Amnesty International reports on human rights violations around the world are reported virtually every day of the week, attempting to sort fact from fiction.

  • Committee to Protect Journalists. Documents the conditions of press freedom in 117 countries, including Algeria.

  • FIDH - International Federation of Human Rights Leagues. La première organisation internationale de défense des droits de l'Homme à s'être constituée, en 1922.

  • Human Rights Watch The HRW investigates and exposes human rights violations.
  • International Federation of Human Rights Leagues. English version of above. The FIDH is the first international organization to defend human rights since 1922. It's headquarters is in France.
  • The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. Calls on a global network of volunteer experts and provides practical assistance to civic and political leaders advancing democratic values, practices and institutions. NDI works with democrats in every region of the world to build political and civic organizations.

  • Ghardàya. From the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC). Offered in English, French, and Spanish.
  • Les Lions Algeriens. Site of the Algerian Lions Club.
  • MEOC (Middle East Outreach Council). This is a "must-see" for serious students and teachers of any country in the Middle East and North Africa. The site includes a list of websites with contact information from universities across the country (USA) that have Outreach programs. Although these programs are geared toward helping teachers of K-12 grade, the Outreach directors are a valuable resource for students of any level seeking information on the pertinent countries.
  • Mouvement Écologique Algérien (AEM), created and legalized in August 1989 for the purpose of promoting scientifically established measures able to link development to the protection of environment in a bid to improve durably the quality of life. Offered in English and French.
  • Naql El Ilm Project. This project is dedicated to helping scientists and engineers inside and outside Algeria improve on the existing telecommunication infrastructure in Algeria. Information offered in English and in French.
  • NGO Voice. Voluntary Organizations in Cooperation in Emergencies within the Liaison Committee of NGDOs to the European Union. See #2, Lobbying, about Algérie Libertés.
  • Portal of the Human Universe Organization with the goal to improve the materialistic, mental, cultural, and spiritual quality of human life all over the world.
  • UNEVOC Directory: Algeria. UNEVOC is UNESCO's International Project on Technical and Vocational Education, dedicated to developing and improving technical and vocational education in the latter's Member States. Its focus is on information exchange, networking and international co-operation. This site offers contact information for the Ministry of Education and National Institute of Vocational Education.

  • Algerian Dardja-English Dictionary.
  • Algerian National Anthem. Words of the anthem are written in Arabic transliteration (Roman letters), the original French, and English translation.
  • La cuisine algérienne. While the title means "Algerian cuisine," this site has more than recipies, though it has plenty of those, too. There is a section on demographic information on Algeria, a discussion forum, a jukebox, links to French newspapers, and much more. Presently in French only, but an English section is expected in the near future.
  • La Mode Algerienne Women's clothes from Algeria.

  • BACKGROUND INFO ON ALGERIA

    The sites listed below offer a hodgepodge of information--from archaeological and historical to political and touristy--some of which are particularly good for high school students or others who have no knowledge of Algeria and need to start with the basics. Other sites may be useful to more advanced researchers as they contain statistical information or important historical documents.

  • Algeria This site offers loads of information, but unfortunately has not been updated since 1997. It is useful for background information on Algeria, including US policy toward the country.
  • Algeria. Sections to check out is Books and Periodicals, which list bibliographical information on Algeria.
  • Algeria: History. Includes a few historical documents.
  • Algerie Flash: Documentation. Lists articles (French and English) on Algeria found on the internet. Site was last updated in 1996. An interesting footnote on this site is that it was created by Michael Connor, a fourth-year Honors student in French as part of his Bachelor of Arts degree, and the research, focusing on political problems encountered in Algeria, was based on reports produced by an "internet author," an expatriate Algerian who regularly contributed to the various lists and discussion groups about the country.

  • The Avalon Project at the Yale Law School: The Barbary Treaties. Includes full document signed between the United States and the Bey of Algiers in 1810 (in English), as well as other 18th and 19th century documents.
  • Biography of Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui, Member of the Court since March 19, 1982 and its President from 1994 to 1997. Information is current.

  • Les Cahiers de l'Orient. This site covers the main texts from two special publications (36/37 and 39/40), published in 1995. Also includes complete text from San Egidio meeting. In French.
  • L'Histoire du Peuple Algerien. The History of the Algerian people in pictures. Offers photos of early Algerian leaders, nationalists, and political incidents.
  • Miftah Shamali- Algeria. Packed with information. Details on many of Algeria's cities, as well as archaeological sites. Includes possible pertinent tourist information (last updated in May 1997).
  • ONS: Office National des Statistiques. National Office of Statistics, offered in French and Arabic. The English version is under construction.

  • A Celebration of Women Writers: Algeria. The site is dedicated to female writers from around the world, this particular page dedicated to female Algerian writers. No information, however, on the writers is available yet on the site, but it may improve in time.
